girls who are 14-16 rn are really going through it with makeup and instagram culture in a way that young teenagers of my day did not and it’s very concerning 😶
I really really worry about kids growing up right now, especially young girls. When I was 14 makeup for me was experimenting with smudged pencil eyeliner and drug store mascara. For most girls it was those lipglosses flavored like candy. We were already being taught our appearances mattered and many of us had the self esteem issues and dysphoria that come with that (growing up a girl is hell) but even so, we got to be kids that much longer. There wasn’t that same pressure to be flawless, and everything wasn’t photographed, documented, and posted to social media the way it is now. Facebook only started to get really popular when I was in middle school, and instagram wasn’t really a thing until my sophomore year of high school I think. The pressure put on girls to be attractive isn’t anything new, but modern day makeup culture, Instagram, photoshop touch ups etc are all pushing that pressure on younger and younger girls, and setting the bar for “perfection” that much higher.
