In 1943, a team of ingenious Italian doctors invented a deadly, contagious virus called Syndrome K to protect Jews from annihilation. On October 16 of that year, as Nazis closed in to liquidate Rome’s Jewish ghetto, many runaways hid in the 450-year-old Fatebenefratelli Hospital. There, anti-Fascist doctors including Adriano Ossicini, Vittorio Sacerdoti and Giovanni Borromeo created a gruesome, imaginary disease.
The doctors instructed “patients” to cough very loudly and told Nazis that the disease was extremely dangerous, disfiguring and molto contagioso. Soldiers were so alarmed by the list of symptoms and incessant coughing that they left without inspecting the patients. It’s estimated that a few dozen lives were saved by this brilliant scheme.
The doctors were later honored for their heroic actions, and Fatebenefratelli Hospital was declared a “House of Life” by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation.
the situation with tumblr just kinda reinforces the notion that most big social networks are grifts that are just constantly hemorrhaging money and the founders are just trying to trick venture capital investors into thinking they can make money off of ads just long enough for them to sell the site for a fat check and retire while the site slowly dies
this is, tragically, why vine died. you can’t put ads in front of a six second video. tumblr’s lasted much longer, and i don’t expect it to implode overnight, but it’s clearly very difficult to monetize tumblr. remember how staff said they were going to implement an ad program we could make money off of in, oh… 2016? that sure went nowhere
regardless on whether tumblr follows through with the nsfw ban or not there is a 100% chance that “female presenting nipples” will become a cards against humanity white card
My favorite thing about Fallout New Vegas is that it’s sheer ridiculousness has manifested itself within Courier Six themself with the community. When you think of the Courier, you do not think of the ruff and tuff Cowboy of the Mojave, the mysterious and brave Ranger of New Vegas. You think of the Fucking Mailman. That Piece of Shit running around killing mutant nightmares and hanging out with Elvis impersonators. The Guy that dragged ass across the entire Desert to stab the anus of Mr. “What in The Goddamn” Benny. That Crazy Dude that crawled out of their own grave and thought “fuck it, New Vegas is mine now”. THAT, is Courier Fuckmothering Six.
What is almost certainly happening with Tumblr’s image classifier is that they’ve deployed the bot entirely untrained, and are relying on user complaints to train it what NSFW content on tumblr looks like.
Making people participate in their own censorship in this way and punishing them with the threat of being silenced even if in compliance with the rules should they not participate, is, IMHO, abuse of their userbase.
Source: I’ve worked for three different top-five social networks, and at all of them this type of work would have been done by making the userbase do it as much as possible.
Please signal boost. I don’t care if you reblog or repost, just get the word out so that people know what they’re doing as they interect with this thing.
My twitter is @soren_tycho (nsfw, sfw account coming soon) and my github username is sorentycho.
Just chiming in as a machine learning expert, this is almost certainly the case (and knowing tumblr, they weren’t even smart enough to throw in pre-trained weights)
I don’t remember agreeing to beta test 🤔
A well known AI blogger I follow also supports this theory.
This is a fucking terrible way to train AI, even from a purely logistic angle.
